The Lunation Cycle
In his book "The Lunation Cycle" the great Astrologer & Philosopher Dane Rudhyar describes how the Lunar cycle represents the most visible pattern of almost all Astrological cycles.
The cycle starts and ends when the Moon "catches" the Sun at the New Moon in it's monthly "race" around the Earth. The waxing Half Moon represents the end of the first quarter, the Full Moon is the culmination of the cycle at the half-way point, and the waning Half Moon is the start of the last quarter.
Every celestial body in our solar system appears from our perspective on Earth to move at a different speed across the backdrop of the sky. If you think of this like two cars on a circular race track (with the race track being the Zodiac), with one slow car and one fast car, the cycle begins at the start of the race when the two bodies are "conjunct," peaks when they oppose each other on opposite sides of the track, and then begins again at the next conjunction, when the faster car "laps" the slower car, and starts the cycle all over again.
Rudhyar likens the conjunction to the planting of a "seed-idea" that is a combination of the characters and  archetypes of the two bodies that conjunct, and further by their position in the Zodiac and their relationship to the other bodies in the system at the time of the conjunction. When the two bodies reach a 90-degree relationship to one another, or the first quarter, the highest degree of stress in bringing this new idea to fruition takes place. In the opposition, the culmination of this unique idea is realized and expressed. At the last quarter, the change in consciousness that is a result of the presentation of this new idea is brought to the greatest stress.

In Astrology, the Sun represents the conscious will and the focus towards future action, while the Moon represents our emotional state and the draw that comes from the past. In the conjunction between the Sun and Moon at each New Moon, there is an opportunity to create a new idea for the future with the support of the past. The Full Moon is the "flowering" of this idea.
The Lunar cycle also represents how we continually try to balance the Male and Female principle in our lives. We can observe how this cycle affects us by following the cycle in our own birthchart, noting the sign, house and position of the Sun and Moon as it moves through this cycle every month.
